Market

Church Street has been associated with its market for a very long time.

The first market to take up residence in the area was the famous Portman Market which established itself as a rival to Covent Garden Market.

It started life as a covered vegetable and hay market, opening later on Church Street through an Act of Parliament. When it closed in 1907 stallholders started trading from the street. Some stalls, including some of the fruit stalls and fish stalls of today, have retained their family connections having been handed down through generations of the same family.
