Bell Street got its name from a Bell Field, which was 5 ½ acres at the time.

Bell Street has at times been a busy road. More recently it has been home to a number of shops and pubs, as well as a thriving flea market. At one time there was a Ragged School for children who could not afford to go elsewhere. It is believed that 160 children were said to have attended at one point.

Beneath the streets of Bell Street passes the Metropolitan Line, running between Paddington and Farringdon.

Some great photos of Bell Street in the seventies from Jake Bernard here http://www.flickr.com/photos/jakeyjb/sets/72157624051090180/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/jakeyjb/sets/72157606394403892/ and look around his photosets, there are a couple of later Bell Street and a set of Chapel Street.

My sister went to Bell Street School in the 30's and my brother went from Cosway Street School to Marylebone Grammar School at the same time. I went to Regents Park Central School. I sang in the choir at Christ Church in Bell Street too. I think the front of that Church still remains.

I went to Regent's Park Central for a short period in 1945 when I returned from evacuation. The school then moved back to its original building on Lisson Grove where I stayed until 1947. My form teacher was Mr Harris, I also remember Ms Boaz.
