Memories of Bell Street

By Bernard Leebay

Reading about Allen's the greengrocer in Bell Street reminded me of the time just after the war, going to Allen's for my mum's shopping. I had been evacuated. I was born in Bell Street and still have quite a good memory of the shops and market stalls that were there. I went to school at Bell Street School (now under a new name). I have wonderful memories of going to the Met on the Edgware Road.

I have recently found your site and find it most interesting. Hope to see more info about the area. Just seen picture of the convent school in Lisson Grove. I also attended there just before the war.

My relative Mary Welch lived at 40 Bell Street in 1911 and is listed as a Wardrobe Dealer. I know she sent theatrical clothes back to my great grandmother Mary Ann Welch, her sister-in-law, back in Sunderland. My mother said that when clients came to try clothes on, she and her twin sister had to go outside to play. I see via Google, that the building has been pulled down as a modern one stands there now.
