This is a view of the Marylebone Road at the junction of Lisson Grove showing the Philological School in Summer.

Along with other charitable gentlemen of the time the school was founded by Thomas Collingwood in 1792 in order to afford relief 'to the heads of families, who by unexpected misfortune, have been reduced from a station of comfort and respectability'.

Boys were provided with the kind of education that led them into respectable professions in the Church, Navy and mechanical occupations.
