Giljays

By John Sheather

My bedroom  (Cherwell House) was right above Giljays and as a youngster I would sit in my bedroom window and listen to the music blaring from the Giljay's stall on a Saturday afternoon. Folks would dance in the triangular area in front of the store.  "Max at the Met" was a crowd favourite (Max Miller).  Years later I volunteered as a DJ at Whittingdon Hospital in Highgate and Joe Giljay would lend all the records to play on my "show".
