My grandfather worked at Marylebone Station, having joined the railway aged 14 or 15. Having moved up from Buckinghanshire he worked there all his life. He was a checker and I think my dad worked there briefly too.

I was born at 165 Lisson Grove in 1947 but that house along with the adjoining ones were demolished to make way for a new block of flats in the 1950s. We backed on to the coal yard. We stayed in the area but I had no idea Lisson Grove had such a bad reputation in the 19th century.

my dad Frank Watkins worked there during the 30s/40s. I left school at Bell Street and walked up there to park road and worked in a hairdressing salon called Figero's.

I lived in Scott Ellis Gardens and went to Gateforth Street School so on my way home each day I passed the door that led to the coal yard. I always hoped it would be unlocked so I could go down the stairs and play on the coal heaps.

I remember that door and the view of the goods yard from the Lisson Grove bridge.
