Over 70 years ago on September 1st 1939, Germany invaded Poland without warning sparking the start of World War Two. By the evening of September 3rd, Britain had joined the war that was to last for 6 years and claim millions of lives.

London was to feel the brunt of enemy attacks with children being evacuated to attempt to shield them from attack that could happen day or night.

Below are pictures taken of Church Street and surrounding areas during World War 2. It is impossible to imagine the terror felt by residents at the time but these pictures give us a vision of what they went through.
