Street parties to remember

Church Street has seen many celebrations over the years. Street parties have taken place in the area to mark VE Day as well as the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 and her subsequent Golden Jubilee in 2002.

Street parties were held throughout the country and photos from this period are among the most popular we receive about the area.

Adults still living in the area have fond and happy memories of being around Church Street at the time of the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of 1977. Many remember the exciting atmosphere, including the entertainers such as clowns and the puppet show which was arranged especially for the event. With plenty to eat and plenty to drink it was a happy day for many residents, both young and old.

In the manner of 1977, the celebrations were again repeated in 2002.
